Families play a vital role in the Sequatchie County School System. We encourage the involvement of families and strive to keep them informed of their rights.

Parents will have access to system/school report cards for school and district data as developed by the State Department of Education and available (usually in the fall of each year) through their website (www.state.tn.us/education) or at the Board of Education building.
The Sequatchie County School System submitted a Toxic Substance Management Plan to TN Dept of Finance and Administration. Asbestos-containing materials are present in Griffith Elementary School and Sequatchie County High School. The Management Plan is available to the public for review at Seq. Co Board of Education, GES office and SCHS office from 8:00am to 3:00 pm Monday-Friday.
Parents must receive annual academic results (end of reporting period, TNReady Achievement results,WIDA, and End of Course) in a timely manner as required by the local Board policy and TN Department of Education.
A parental involvement policy is available on the district website at www.sequatchieschools.net or Rhonda Harmon (423) 949-3617. The written parental involvement policy will be reviewed annually at each Title I Schoolwide school's Open House meeting to inform families of their school's participation in programs funded under the Every Student Succeeds Act.
All of Sequatchie County schools are Title I, Schoolwide Schools. Funds are consolidated from federal, state, and local sources to upgrade the educational program of the entire school (qualification: 40% of students must be from verified low income families).
The purpose of the Tennessee Homeless Education Program is to develop educational programs that meet the unique needs of homeless students. Because homeless students face many obstacles to an appropriate education, such as lack of transportation, frequent school changes, and emotional stress, special programs are needed. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Act ensures these students receive the programs they need. An approved policy is on file at the Board of Education Office. Parents can visit the state's website (www.state.tn.us/education) to access a description of the curriculum (TN Curriculum Standards), assessments, and proficiency levels students are expected to meet. Call Marsha Talley or Sarai Pierce at (423) 949-3617 for additional information.
The Sequatchie County School System has a TN Dept of Edu approved Federal Programs Consolidated application for 2019-20 federal funds for the following programs: Title I (Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged); Title II, A (Teacher and Principal Training and Recruitment); and Title IV (Student Support and Academic Enrichment); Title V (Small and Rural Schools). Parents of students identified as limited English proficient (ELL- English Language Learners) must be notified in a timely manner of their child's participation in an ELL Program, details of the program, rights to waive participation, and specific information on the child's level of English proficiency.
Students and parents are encouraged to participate in safe and drug free school programs to prevent student violence and drug use. Parents can request in writing their child's non-participation in such activities. The system has uniformed School Resource Officers in our buildings and patrolling our grounds. School health requirements, policies, and procedures (ex: immunizations, medication at school, etc) are available from the Sequatchie County Health Department (423-949-3619), school principal, or the school nurse at 423-949-2105.
The Board Policy relating to student privacy and parental access to information is available in the School Board Policy Manual located on the district website. Notifications of Rights and Release of Directory information under FERPA, Family Education Rights and Policy Act, are also done through media announcements. This Federal law affords parents and students (over 18 yrs old) certain rights with respect to educational needs. Parents will be notified of any change of Board policy.
Under the TN State Board of Education's Unsafe Choice Policy, any public school student who is the victim of a violent crime as defined under TN Code Annotated 40-38-111(g), or the attempt to commit one of these offences as defined under TN Code Annotated 39-12-101, shall be provided an opportunity to transfer to another grade-level appropriate school within the district.
Griffith Elementary and Sequatchie County Middle School were rewarded a 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program grant. Before school, after school and summer (remedial and enrichment) activities will be available for students. For more information contact Rhonda Harmon at (423-949-3617). All paraprofessionals instructing students in the Sequatchie County School System has Highly Qualified status as defined by the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act).
Parents have the right to request information about professional qualifications concerning their child's teacher(s) and should be informed if their child is served by any paraprofessional providing educational assistance, and if so, their qualifications. Teaching certifications can be found by accessing the TN Department of Education, Teacher Licensing Web Site at https://www.k-12.state.tn.us/tcertinf or contacting Marsha Talley or Robbie Somerville, Curriculum Supervisors at 423-949-3617.
