21st CCLC Students Names Going to Mars
GES and SCMS 21st CCLC After-school students submitted their names to be sent to Mars on NASA's Mars 2020 rover. This rover is scheduled to launch as early as July 2020 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and expected to touch down on Mars in February 2021.
Each student was presented with a souvenir boarding pass for documentation of their name being sent to the Red Planet. The Microdevices Laboratory will use an electron beam to stencil the submitted names onto a silicon chip. The chip will ride on the rover under a glass cover.
Last June, many of these students visited the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL during the 21st CCLC 2019 Summer Camp to learn about the U.S. space program.
